Recently I have been participating with a group called the Eugene Math Group. One of the issues it is addressing is how to enrich the math education of students during their “no school” days necessitated by tight school budgets. The goal is also to enhance the “at home” math education of students whose parents and volunteers are willing to work with children.

In browsing the Web today, I came across a newspaper article reporting about a sh0ool district requiring all ninth graders to take a computer course. (http://www.philly.com/philly/education/20100927_Springfield_High_looks_at_computers_in-depth.html) The Springfield Township district is the first in Pennsylvania to mandate that students take a computer science course as a graduation requirement.

We are all interested in improving our informal and formal education systems. This is an everyday challenge to parents, teachers, politicians, and many other people.

In September 2010 the National Academies made available a report titled: Rising above the gathering storm, revisited: Rapidly approaching Category 5. This is a follow-up to a much longer report published five years ago: Rising above the gathering storm. The new report can be downloaded free in PDF format from http://www.nap.edu/catalog/12999.html. The 2005 report has a publication date of 2007 and is available for free download at http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=11463.
